Citizen Radio Controlled Red Arrows Titanium Skyhawk A-T Watch

WOW what a great watch. The service from 1st class watches was also 1st class. Instructions were blob on, easy to understand. The Titanium is light and hypoallergenic which suits me down ti the ground. I have a lot of watches and still own a fair few, but is the icing on the cake.

The Citizen Skyhawk Red Arrows Watch JY0110-55E.

I have admired this watch for a long lime and finally I had the chance to own one. It is a very striking watch and has many special features which include being Solar Powered and is capable of receiving radio signals to keep the watch extremely accurate.
It has a dual time capability setting with a selection of 32 major cities to choose from !
There is also a Chronograph / Stopwatch and 2 alarm settings which is a very useful addition in this modern world of constant meetings.
The battery indicator on the watch face gives the status of the Solar rechargeable battery and apparently the watch is capable of being stored in the dark for six months without loosing all its battery charge.
The instruction manual supplied with the watch is excellent and easy to follow. It can also be downloaded from Citizen,an option which I find easier to use on some of the setting operations
The only negative (which is minor)I have with the watch is the fact that whilst the hour and minute hands are white and very easy to read, the second hand is red and is sometimes very hard to read against the red areas on the watch face.
Overall this is an excellent watch and is superb value for money.

I have wanted this watch for about 3 years... At the time, the stainless steel Red Arrows version cost somewhere between £400 and £500. This was more expensive than the Blue Angels version of this watch. The Red Arrows Titanium version obviously cost more.

The two main reasons that I wanted this watch were:

1) Solar Charging
2) Atomic Time (synchronisation)

In 2014 I found a Casio watch with equivalent features but basically at half the price. This is the ECW-M300EDB-1AER. I got this for £200.

This Christmas, at last I got the Citizen Skyhawk Red Arrows Titanium - at a bargain price of £373.

The watch is very light (being titanium strap and titanium back). I'm not sure if the watch case itself is titanium although I assume that it is.

Back light is orange and lights up the 2 LCD displays.

There are 4 small dials and the hour/minute/second hands.

The first dial, top left, has 2 functions. In normal time keeping it shows the battery charge level - there are 4 levels, ranging from dead to maximum. During atomic time synchronisation, this dial points to the area that it is looking for the signal from - in my case, EUR.

The second dial is the UTC dial - irrespective of the country that you are in, this dial shows the UTC time (GMT +0). The hours on this dial are 24 hours and not 12, so basically, (A) the hour hand only goes round this dial once a day (not twice like normal clocks) and (B) it means that when the hour hand is in the 6 o'clock position it is noon. Pretty useless dial in my opinion, especially since it mixes you up with the 24 hour setup.

The third dial, top right, is the morning/night (AM/PM) pointer. Basically it points to the hour (there is no minute hand) in your local time (i.e. the time that the main hour/minute hands are showing). Essentially, when this pointer is on the right hand side of the dial it is morning and on the left it is afternoon/evening.

The dial at the bottom is the function selector. The function is selected by pulling out the crown one stop and rotating (clockwise or counterclockwise). The three red functions at the bottom are (left to right):

1) Date - shows the date in the LCD display on the right;
2) Time - shows the world time in the LCD display on the right;
3) Atomic Time Synchronisation Settings

The rest of the function, in clockwise direction are:
4) Timer (countdown timer that sounds an alarm after a stipulated time set by the user);
5) Chronograph (stopwatch);
6) World Time Settings - allows you to set daylight savings settings for each country, and also setting a time zone offset for a country named "HOM" (home);
7) Alarm 1
8) Alarm 2

There is no chime (i.e. beeping on the turn of the hour) feature on this watch!

The 2 LCD displays:

Left displays the home country (capital city) - I had to set ROM (Rome) since Malta/Valletta is not available.

Right displays time or date depending on what function is selected. It also displays any other settings depending on the function. When going through the functions (by rotating the crown in the first position) you can pull the crown out in the second position in order to get the second set of settings for that function. All these are explained in the user manual.

The watch tries synchronising with the atomic clock (in our case situated in Germany) every day at night (there are stipulated time slots - 1am, 2am and 3am if I am not mistaken). There is an additional slot set by default for 4am but which can be changed by the user.

Pressing the lower right button briefly will show you whether the last synchronisation was successful or not. This is displayed as follows:

1) the first dial moves to point to the area (EUR in our case)
2) the second hand moves to point to:
2a) 11 if the synchronisation was not successful. This is because under the 11, in red (not very visible in my photo) there is "NO" written.
2b) points to a point on the thin red line between 1 and 3 if successful. This line shows the strength of the reception that it got while synchronising. The top part of the red line (slightly thicker) means high reception, the mid-part means medium reception and the bottom part means low reception.

If the lower right button is pressed for 2 seconds - the watch will enter synchronisation mode and will try reading a signal from the atomic clock.

Comparison between the Casio and the Citizen

Atomic Time - Synchronisation
The casio seems less fussy when trying to synchronise. It seems to synchronise faster and it is less picky about the location where it is placed in order to pick up a signal. The Citizen is somewhat slower to synchronise and more sensitive to reception.

Atomic Time - Diagnostics
I have explained above how one can check whether the last synchronisation was successful or not on the Citizen. However, the Casio is somewhat different. Although the Citizen shows you the signal strength that it synchronised at, the Casio will instead show you the last date that synchronisation occurred. So if for example you leave the Casio in a drawer in your basement and does not manage to synchronise, when you take it out a month later and check, it will let you know how long ago was the last synchronisation as opposed to the Citizen that will only tell you whether the last synchronisation was successful or not.

Weight
The Citizen is much lighter since it is Titanium.

Looks
The Citizen is a winner by far!

Alarms
5 alarms on the Casio vs 2 alarms on the Citizen. Also there is no chime feature on the citizen whereas the Casio can be set to beep every hour. I miss that feature...

LED Illumination
The Citizen illuminates the displays whereas the Casio has an old school LED on the 6 o'clock that illuminates the hands and dial. In my opinion the light on the Casio is more useful as that shows the time, whereas on the Citizen unless you have the right LCD display set to display time (not date like I set it to) and the world time is set to be the same as your home time, it's useless.

Battery life
I have not compared them. The Citizen came with 3/4 charge and I have not bothered to put it in the sun to charge completely yet. The dial has remained on 3/4 charge.

Overall conclusion

The Citizen is a much nicer watch, especially with the Red Arrows styling. However, I feel that at half the price, the Casio has more features and synchronises with the atomic clock more easily.

Love this watch. So light for a big watch. Quality craftsmanship all the way. Great at keeping with radio controlled time keeping. So light with Titanium. Great looking too. Recommend this watch 100%. Just buy it.

The watch I purchased I have been looking at for a long time. The cost being a big factor. I came across First Class Watches by an Internet search for the watch itself. Not only was the cost of the watch less than in the shops but credit was available too. The application was very easy to complete and I was accepted within minutes. The watch was received within 2 days from the application. You can't do any better than that what a service! The watch itself? I am very pleased. It is often said we have saved the best to last and boy is this watch just superb.
I will not go in to the spec details, being Titanium the weight and size is fine for me.
It is a mans watch very masculine designed to look good one I will be wear with pride.
The sellers service was outstand to be recommended.
I would use them again.

Great watch from citizen as always i have another skyhawke but this is better being titanium it's much lighter in weight citizen watches are the best, and so is first class watches

Great looking watch, really pleased, very clear instructions and easy to use (excellent Citizen online information). The watch is very light and does not feel too big, the radio time setting works well, not as quick as G-Shock's version but works well. Everything is easy to read on the face, the digital screens are nice and clear. If you plan to adjust the strap yourself, the pins are very small, you need proper tools. Slightly disappointed with the RAF roundall on the face as its not a very good sticker/paint job in my opinion, also the red arrows motif on the rear is not 100% straight but I am very fussy. Overall 9/10 from me so far. FCW also make the purchase very easy.
